Austria: Wild boar to be hunted throughout Vienna
State parliament in Vienna has ruled that wild boar could be legally hunted throughout the country’s capital. Many areas, on the outskirts of the city in particular, have long been struggling with the animals.
Hunting of wild boar in Vienna was previously only permitted in restricted hunting zones. The hunting act has now been amended however to take in the entire city. In future, areas which have up until now not been hunting zones will be known as “Jagdruhensgebiet”. This means that whilst the areas are not labelled “Jagdgebiet” or hunting zones, animals may be shot if necessary. The new law includes all wild animals and not just the boar.
Residents in the district of Döbling in Vienna have been particularly badly affected by the animals over the past few months. Landowners were instructed to improve their fencing to prevent the animals from churning up their gardens and trawling through bins but for many this was just too expensive. (via Austrian Times)
