Council workers clean the tile floor after removing a raised wooden floor-covering, for a rare public showing of the original floor in the concert hall at St George’s Hall. The 30,000 Minton floor tiles depicting tritons, sea nymphs as well as the Liverpool coat of arms were laid in 1852 as the building was being constructed. The floor was then covered in the 1860s to enable dancing and events to take place in the hall, whilst preserving the tiles. The hidden tiled floor will be unveiled and cleaned in a process that takes four days to facilitate a rare public viewing in the Grade I listed building which also has one of the largest barrel vaulted ceilings in the country.
