Bulgaria Quarantines Smuggled Exotic Animals
After a Bulgarian was busted trying to smuggle monitor lizards, tortoises, snakes, caimans, pythons, chameleons and other peculiar animals into the country with the use of suitcases, the creatures have been quarantined in the Sofia zoo.
One or two of the animals have reportedly undergone medical treatment. Most of them are still babies, so they have been placed under ultraviolet light in order to prevent rickets.
The Sofia zoo has sought assistance from foreign experts on how to deal with the exotic creatures. Several zoos abroad have been contacted and asked for advice, Sofia zoo director Ivan Ivanov has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

Sofia named ‘most livable city in Bulgaria’ in annual contest
Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia has been named the country’s “most liveable city” for 2011 in a poll organised by mass-circulation daily 24 Chassa and Darik Radio.
This was the fifth year the poll was held. It was won by Varna in 2007 and 2008, Sofia in 2009 and Bourgas in 2010.
The awarded was handed to Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandukova at a January 30 ceremony by President Rossen Plevneliev.
The winner was adjudged according to 28 criteria in the poll.
Sofia scored maximum points in the areas of investment infrastructure projects, shop opening hours, and the number of restaurants, cafes and pharmacies. The city also won in the proximity-to-airport category, number of universities, cultural life, employment rate and number of births per capita. (via The Sofia Echo)
